How to Choose a Silk Saree: A Simple Guide
A silk saree is rarely just a purchase. It’s the saree you’ll wear to a wedding, pass on to a daughter, or bring out every Diwali. Here’s how to choose one you’ll love for years.
1. Start with the occasion
A daytime pooja or naming ceremony suits lighter silks with a moderate border. Weddings and receptions can carry heavier silk, wider zari borders and a grand pallu. Knowing where you’ll wear it narrows the choice quickly.
2. Pick a colour that flatters you
Contrast pairings like lime with wine, red with gold, or purple with teal are timeless because they photograph beautifully and suit most skin tones. If you already own plenty of reds, try an unexpected jewel tone like violet or bottle green.
3. Feel the weight and the fall
Hold the saree up and let it drop. Good silk falls in soft, heavy folds and has a gentle sheen that changes as it moves. Lighter silks are easier to manage all day; heavier ones give a more regal drape.
4. Look closely at the zari and border
- Check that the motifs are evenly woven, with no loose threads on the front.
- A wide, detailed border and pallu add grandeur for weddings.
- Small butta motifs across the body add richness without weight.
5. Think about the blouse
Decide whether you want a matching or contrast blouse. A contrast blouse, such as pink with lime or wine with yellow, can make the same saree look completely different at your next function.
6. Care for it well
Store silk wrapped in soft cotton cloth, away from sunlight and moisture, and refold it every few months. With a little care, your silk saree will stay beautiful for a lifetime.
